South Padre Island, TX: Day 1

My sister and I adore going to the beach as often as we can afford to go. This year we decided to take a summer vacation to SPI. It was quite funny how this whole vacation came about. My father sent me a link via email about a Groupon for hotels on the island. He sent it as a joke to tease me since he knows how much we love the beach. Little did he know that I immediately asked my sister when she wanted to go, we picked a date and booked the hotel. I don't play when it comes to the beach!

From where we live in Texas it takes roughly 8 hours to drive down to the island, depending on how you drive. I have to say that the drive down is so freaking boring so I do tend to speed... Quite a bit. So, it takes me under 8 hours. My sister and I switched drivers every two hours to keep us from getting too sore or too bored. It worked out great! By switching every two hours by the time I would start to get slightly stiff it was either time to switch or very close to time. It definitely made the drive more bearable.

Seeing as how neither of us makes much money at our current jobs we are staying at the Motel 6 on the island, which as I stated above I did get at a discounted price. It's Motel 6, so we did not expect a super fancy room. However, their website and the booking receipt that they emailed me said that the room would have a refrigerator and microwave, it does not. Thankfully we did bring a cooler with us and any perishable items we made sure to eat for dinner. So, now we are mainly keeping our drinks in it.

Today for lunch we ate at a local cafe called Grapevine Cafe and Coffeehouse. Considering that the nearest Starbucks is over 100 miles away, their coffee was amazing! My sister had a Macadamia Nut Latte and I had a Chai Latte. I tried my sister's and it was awesome. While mine was technically a tea, it was still amazing. I believe that they could be good competition for Starbucks if they were to become a chain coffee house. It was somewhat weird to me, that some of their menu items included burgers and fajitas. When I think of a cafe I think of coffee and sandwiches mainly. And they did have sandwiches. But, they also had several burgers and Mexican restaurant style dishes. Their cooking was very good though. Definitely fresh and made to order. Considering that everything was fresh there was a slight wait for our food. But our coffee came quickly so we were able to enjoy our drinks while we waited. Even though we did have a little bit of a wait, it still was not very long compared to most places. You could probably have considered the cafe to be busy, but not overly so. And even though there were several other families there it was still very relaxed and quiet. As with most places on the island, there was not much storefront parking, but they did have parallel parking (Thankfully I know how).

We really loved the cafe and will most likely be going back every morning at least for coffee!

I will be posting a blog every day of our trip with reviews of the places we go! So, keep coming back for more, especially if you are planning a vacation down here and want to know some good places to check out!

Thanks for reading and see you next time!
